Snuffy Smith : (John Rose) This strip started in 1918
as Take Barney Google F'rinstance. Back then
it was done by Billy DeBeck and looked a lot like Mutt
and Jeff (IMO). Sometime later, the name of
the strip was shortened to Barney Google and
at some point (sorry, don't know the exact date) Snuffy
Smith was introduced as a minor character. In 1942,
DeBeck died and his former assistant Fred Lasswell took over
the strip. Under orders from the syndicate to make the
strip more modern, Snuffy Smith soon became the lead
character and the art style of the strip changed to what we
all know an love today. Snuffy Smith's name was added
to the title (officially known as Barney Google and
Snuffy Smith) and Barney is very rarely ever seen
these days. In 2001, Lasswell died and his longtime
assistant (and inker) John Rose took over the strip.
So expect this strip to live on forever!
